The Universe is very large and expanding at a rate of 160,000 MPH. Only 5% of the matter of the Universe is visible to us as planets, stars, galaxies, etc. The rest is a goulash of Dark Energy and Dark Matter.

Of all humans who have ever lived, 5% are alive today. The other 95% are dead. But do their spirits live on in digital form? Could that account for the Dark Energy (in the clouds) and Dark Matter (underground)?

    I will take your bets.

One more thing...You can rest assured that God controls the Internet.

God doesn't control the Internet. The Chinese Communist Party does. I'll take your bets on that one.

So if dead people are dark energy and dark matter, where do new people come from? Or are we running out of new people and hence armageddon is upon us?

    1. New people come from a man and a woman having sex. It's quite enjoyable under the right circumstances.

    2. The Universe is expanding. People are dying, and new people are being born. Both contribute to the content of the Universe. Some of the dead are being reincarnated, which gets complicated.

    3. Is Armageddon upon us? Of course. The challenge is predicting exactly when it will happen. Just like trying to time the stock market.

Obviously you need to view this discussion among experts regarding this topic.  It is all answered and addressed in this video.

Thanks for the link Gerhard. I'll take a listen when I get home. There are also some other interesting links to the right of that one.

This Nova documentary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpnrHsRerIQ is a good hour well spent. Several comments:

    • Wonderful graphics
    • This was made before evidence of the Higgs field. Subsequently proven true, of course.
    • They mention Dark Energy contributing 70% of the Universe, but fail to mention Dark Matter and its 25%. And yes, Dark Energy is increasing in absolute terms (though not necessarily as a percentage of the Universe), and its distribution is highly variable.
    • Stay until the end. The last bit about all content sucked into a Black Hole being retained in 2-D digital form on the surface is fascinating. New speculation is that all content of the Universe is retained on its surface, and everything inside is a 3-D Hologram. JUST LIKE TUPAC HOLOGRAM. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGbrFmPBV0Y.

There is almost nothing about this that makes any sense. If you add up total human population, there are as many people alive today as existed throughout history. So 50% of the population that ever lived is alive today.  And digital?  Do you know what digital is?  Just my brain alone with take a set of CDs as high as a skyscraper and you think the whole universe is in binary somewhere?

Hank, this is a Theory of Everything forum. Who said it had to make sense to everyone? If you believe in some sort of Afterlife, which most people do, then you've got to find a way to reconcile relativity, quantum mechanics, etc. with the ultimate question: What happens to our minds when we die?

As for the percentage of humans who have ever lived who are alive today, can you provide a reference for your 50% estimate? Here's my reference for 5% (actually 6.5%, but I rounded it off): http://www.prb.org/Articles/2002/HowManyPeopleHaveEverLivedonEarth.aspx

And it wasn't me that came up with the crazy theory that the Universe is a 3D hologram. That was spun out of String Theory. I picked it up from the Nova special linked above.

That's fine, but you would ordinarily have some sort of rationale for posting it. If I post a link claiming the moon is made of cheese, most people would believe I had some reason to post a link saying the moon is made of cheese. Being on Nova doesn't say much - television shows also have programs about the science of ghosts - and just about anything can be spun our of string theory.

Anyway, you know what you are doing so, okay. I was just worried you were losing your mind.

Thanks Hank. I just thought a Theory of Everything invited some far out speculation. BTW, just for fun, to follow-up your digital content of a brain = 1 skyscraper analogy, I calculated how many Empire State Buildings can fit in the KNOWN Universe. Assuming the volume of the Universe is 24 X 10e44 cubic miles (one estimate), the answer is 1X10e49 Empire State Buildings.

    THAT'S HALF A GOOGLE.

Yep. In that context we could fit all those skycraper-sized digital versions of humans in just the state of Texas.

Governor Rick Perry just got digitally aroused.
