QS World University Rankings(R) subject tables are based on an academic survey completed by 15,050 academics, including 700 university leaders, who were asked to identify the universities producing the best research in their own field of knowledge and within their region of expertise. The overall rankings take into account employer reputation, research strength and teaching and international commitment.

Paul Thurman, a leading statistician and professor at Columbia University says: The benefit of the academic peer review is it allows comparison of universities at a multi-disciplinary level or by single disciplines, based on the expertise identified by the respondent. The QS rankings methodology is conservative and robust... and the overall results are certainly statistically valid.
