"No one should approach the temple of science with the soul of a money changer."

    Thomas Browne (1605-1682)

"There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then you've made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you've made a discovery."

    Enrico Fermi (1901—1954), Italian physicist.

"In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous."

    Aristotle

    Paul Dirac

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”

    Charles Darwin

"I am among those who think that science has great beauty. A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician: he is also a child placed before natural phenomena which impress him like a fairy tale."

    Marie Curie

"I believe in an immortal soul. Science has proved that nothing disintegrates into nothingness. Life and soul, therefore, cannot disintegrate into nothingness, and so are immortal."

    Dr Wernher Von Braun

"I maintain there is much more wonder in science than in pseudoscience. And in addition, to whatever measure this term has any meaning, science has the additional virtue, and it is not an inconsiderable one, of being true."

    Carl Sagan

"I want to know God's thoughts. The rest are details."

    A. Einstein

"Science has proof without any certainty. Creationists have certainty without any proof."

    Ashley Montague

"Science may set limits to knowledge, but should not set limits to imagination."

    Bertrand Russell

"Science is facts. Just as houses are made of stones, so is science made of facts. But a pile of stones is not a house and a collection of facts is not necessarily science."

    Henri Poincare

"The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them."

    Sir William Bragg

"Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal."

    Albert Einstein

"There are in fact two things, science and opinion. The former begets knowledge, the latter ignorance."

    Hippocrates

"In Science the credit goes to the man who convinces the world, not to the man to whom the idea first occurred."

"The man of science has learned to believe in justification, not by faith, but by verification."

Thomas H. Huxley (1825-95) English biologist.

"I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding of a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) English physicist, mathematician.

" Dicebat Bernardus Carnotensis nos esse quasi nanos, gigantium humeris insidentes, ut possimus plura eis et remotiora videre, non utique proprii visus acumine, aut eminentia corporis, sed quia in altum subvenimur et extollimur magnitudine gigantea. "

" Bernard of Chartres used to say that we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size."

Bernard of Chartres (1060c.-1124) called Socrates of the twelfth century.

These are great! I want more!
Here's one for you Steve: “Out yonder there was this huge world, which exists independently of us human beings and which stands before us like a great, eternal riddle, at least partially accessible to our inspection and thinking. The contemplation of this world beckoned like a liberation.” - Albert Einstein
Here's another: “The past history of our globe must be explained by what can be seen to be happening now. No powers are to be employed that are not natural to the globe, no action to be admitted except
those of which we know the principle.” - James Hutton

    Thanks Eric, keep 'em coming!
I'll have to bookmark this so that when I strike a good one we can all enjoy it!
You're welcome, Steve. I'll keep an eye for more quotes.
I've got one for you Steve!

"It's not that I'm smarter than anyone else, it's just that I stick with a problem longer." - Albert Einstein

I'm not sure if that's the exact quote. It's just something that stuck in my mind from many years ago. You might want to check for the exact quote.
Here's another one, Steve. You're going to love this!

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. - Eleanor Roosevelt
    Steve Davis
    How true is that!
Here's one from Andrew Hessel; Cells operate less like simple processes than as networks of processes, like a country's economy. Each individual process can be studied and makes sense, but can't explain the nature of the entire system in total. Network effects make it almost impossible to figure out exactly what's going on inside of a cell, any cell.
    I love it, Steve!
I've got another quote for you, Steve of which I was recently reminded.......

I don't know how the third World War will be fought, but the fourth World War will be fought with sticks and stones! - Albert Einstein
    Steve Davis
Ah yes, Eric, you could write a book on Einstein's quotes alone!
    Indeed you could, Steve.

For more than 20 years, I have been watching for the source of the following quote, from a physicist talking to a physical chemist: "Why do you muck about with something as complicated as water, when there is so much to learn about the proton?" If anyone knows, I would be most grateful to hear from you, perhaps pasted in below.

It is manifest........ that every soul and spirit has a certain continuity with the spirit of the universe, so that it must be understood to exist and to be included not only there where it liveth and feeleth, but it is also by its essence and substance diffused throughout immensity..........................................

All things are in the Universe, and the universe is in all things: we in it, and it in us; in this way everything concurs in a perfect unity.

Giordano Bruno, De la Causa, Principio et Uno (1584)
