Why Women and The League of Women Voters Started The United Nations
When I was about 15 years old I sat down and had a talk with my Grandmother about the United Nations which she and the League of Woman Voters had helped form earlier as the League of Nations based in San Francisco U.S.A. It later became the United Nations based in New York City. I was studying Esperanto, the United Nations attempt at a One World Language. I liked the the idea of being able to communicate with all people. Of course the Tower of Babel was in my thoughts also.
During this time I did not know about my Grandmother's involvement fully in the creation of the United Nations, she was one of the first if not the first woman speakers in the League of Nations.
When I shared with the townspeople what I had doing, that I had started to study Esperanto and thought it was a great idea, they quickly expressed their opinions about the United Nations. I had really never heard anything bad about it until that time.
So I sat down with her and ask her why people were so against it, and why she and The League of Woman Voters helped form it.
This is what she said: "The men lied to us we had World War I, and they promised us there would never be another World War. Then very shortly after Word War I we had World War II with weapons that could destroy the entire human race the atomic bombs, the men couldn't be trusted, we were afraid they were going to destroy the world."
"As women we give life to the next generations and we couldn't trust that the men wouldn't start World War III and destroy the human race". "So the women started the United Nations so that they could continue the future generations of the human race."
They were empowered women and they were not going to let the men destroy the human race. As a man I would just like to give all those women and the League of Woman Voters my most sincere thanks for that. I like being a part of the human race. Thank You.
I asked then what her speech was about she said "Peace in the World" At that point I didn't care about the opinions of the uneducated townspeople. I had the facts and reasons for the starting of the United Nations.
Fact: We have not had a World War since World War II and hopefully for the sake of the women and the human race we never have another.
