A lot of people born in the US would rather be born in a place where they can never get rich but more things are free for the poor. They're not wrong, normal human psychological variation means most people would rather not compete if given a choice. That is seen all across the animal kingdom.
A new survey of Danish college students by social psychologists has good news for Democrats who want to gain back their losses from the 2024 election; instead of yelling "fascist" at the other party or bragging about how well rich people are doing in the stock market, they should note that the income inequality faced by people who aren't the billionaires on your team leads to poor outcomes in health care and education.

The social psychologists say that when young people were told that greater income inequality was present and education and health outcomes were worse, they became more likely to want more government intervention. That all works, in a bubble. It's when students experience higher taxes to fund more social services and find some refuse to work but expect more things for free - a problem in Denmark since the 1990s - that they begin to wonder if targeting outcomes at any costs need to be the focus.
Everyone is in favor of a free lunch if they don't have to pay for it.
The social psychologists seem to be in a bubble of their own. They claim there is "growing economic inequality" when the gap between rich and poor is lower than any time in human history. Poor people today can afford to be fat, that was only possible in the last 40 years, and no one living is rich enough to build a Versailles or Taj Mahal. That 80% of wealth is held by 10% of people is a drastic improvement from even 100 years ago. A century before it was 1%. Poor people not only couldn't eat meat, only elites could afford cotton clothes.
It will be a struggle to make any positive changes in the US using these results. Good luck telling the rich people in the 8 of 10 wealthiest states, where they vote Democrat, that their taxes are now going to poor schools in states that vote Republican.
They will instead get the 80% of journalists in their tribe ridiculing poor people for voting Republican when as poor people they use more social services than wealthy elites in Manhattan or San Francisco. Which means they are missing the point. And why they missed the chance to win the elections in 2024.
