PARIS, September 22 /PRNewswire/ --
- Recognized for Seminal Contributions to the Science and Technology of Multiple-Antenna Wireless Communications
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Gerard J. Foschini, distinguished scientist and innovator at Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs, has been awarded the 2008 IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal during the IEEE Honors Ceremony in Quebec City, Canada. The Alexander Graham Bell Medal is the highest recognition bestowed by the IEEE for contributions to the advancement of communications sciences and engineering. The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology.
Foschini was recognized for his seminal contributions at Bell Labs to the science and technology of multiple-antenna wireless communications - a critical technology in today's advanced mobile broadband networking. His multiple antenna concepts have allowed for increased data transmission rates by orders of magnitude without increased power at the transmitter, or the increased cost of expanding bandwidth. His research discoveries are core components of many of today's current and emerging wireless communications standards including the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) architecture in IEEE WiFi (802.11n) and WiMAX (802.16e) for wireless data communication, as well as 4G cellular standards including 3GPP and 3GPP2.
Commenting on Dr. Foschini's achievement, Jeong Kim, President of Bell Labs stated: "Jerry personifies the Bell Labs ideal and is a testament to the ever-increasing value of preeminent industrial research. His career at the Labs has been, time and again, distinguished by fundamental discoveries that were rapidly implemented into commercial-ready products. He has been a major contributor to the advancement of wireless capabilities enjoyed today throughout the world."
A Fellow of both IEEE and Bell Labs, Foschini has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the theory and practice of point-to-point wireless technology and his fundamental research in MIMO. He is a past recipient of the IEEE Best Paper Award, IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award, Bell Labs Inventor's Award, the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award and the Bell Labs President's Gold Award. He has published more than 100 papers and holds 15 patents. Foschini is "one of the most highly cited scientists" according to The Institute of Scientific Information. A search through Google Scholar returns in excess of 10,000 citations to his papers.
In addition to his work at Bell Labs, Foschini has taught at Princeton University and is currently a member of the graduate faculty in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rutgers University
He holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, which recently presented him with the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from New York University, and a Doctorate in Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology.
