HARLEYSVILLE, Pennsylvania, February 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Colorcon, Inc., today announced the expansion of its Nutraficient(R), food supplement coating product line to include PVA-based, high-productivity systems designed specifically for use on food supplements marketed within the EU.
European Commission Directive (2010/69/EU), already adopted in the UK, allows the use of existing additives in certain food supplement products. The additives now allowed for use include polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and six grades of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The EU Commission found that the use of PVA or PEG for the coating of food supplements in the form of capsules and tablets are of no safety concern. The directive will be implemented by all member states by March 31, 2011.
"Colorcon was pleased to learn about the Commission's final decision," stated Kamlesh Oza, General Manager for Film Coatings. "Our new, high productivity PVA-based film coatings offer many benefits for food supplement manufacturers who wish to improve the value of their products. Customers can achieve significant manufacturing efficiency using these new higher solids, lower viscosity formulations which result in shorter coating times. Other key benefits of PVA based systems are improved moisture and oxygen barrier properties, as well as superior adhesion and a high gloss finish. A wide range of colors, using non-synthetic pigments, provide branding opportunity and consumer appeal."
