LONDON, October 9 /PRNewswire/ --

Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence(R), in its September WeatherCall(SM) report said that retailers had a strong, although short-lived, start to the season when wetter and cooler weather increased demand for autumn merchandise during the first ten days of the month. By mid-month this favourable seasonal demand faded as temperatures trended back towards normal and sunny days outnumbered grey ones. The pattern shifted again at the very end of the month, when the mellow pattern changed to something more akin to most people's perception of autumn, as a vigorous system brought wind and rain to all parts of the UK.

Over the month as a whole, temperatures were very close to normal, and a shade cooler than last year. Rainfall was also around normal, but markedly wetter than last year, which had been relatively dry.

"Weather provided a short term boost to sales before mild conditions prevailed and many retailers were forced to bring forward mid season sales," stated Tim Morris, Managing Director for Planalytics Europe. "By the end of September we saw much of the high street with sale areas although mostly for transitional merchandise rather than true autumn stock."

Planalytics WeatherCall Report showed positive year-on-year weather driven demand indices for the Knitwear (+13%) and Long Sleeve Shirts (+3%) product categories. Negative year-on-year indices were calculated for Salad Foods (-1%) and Barbeque (-29%) product categories.
