LONDON, December 3 /PRNewswire/ --

Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence(R), explained in its November WeatherCall(SM) report how warm temperatures proved to be a large obstacle to retail sales at the start of the month. Some relief did come in the last half of the month when a cold spell sparked shopping and items such as outerwear, knitwear and heaters began to move from high street shelves. The cold pattern remained in place until the close of the month with many parts of the UK experiencing snow showers, frosts and freezing fog. Although these can often be traffic limiting events, footfall into stores did not appear to suffer as a result.

Planalytics highlighted the heavy discounting across the retail sector during the month of November. These discounts were exhibited by companies such as Debenhams, MS and parts of the Arcadia Group. The majority of these stores were trying to clear an excess in autumn merchandise, making way for winter goods.

The combination of weather and the economy was a large uphill battle for retailers, stated Tim Morris, Managing Director for Planalytics Europe. It didn't seem as the weather would ever cooperate, but a drop in temperature at the end of the month quickly put consumers in the holiday mindset. Retailers are certainly hopeful that the chilly conditions carry on into December.

Planalytics WeatherCall Report showed positive year-on-year weather driven demand indices for the following product categories: Fleece (+21%), Winter Coats (+7%), and Cold Cough Products (+3%).
