PARIS, November 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Bioplastic investors from throughout the world will gather in Paris for the European Bioplastics conference. Germany is an excellent market for bioplastic investments because of favorable legislation and a base of consumers that buys environmentally friendly products. Invest in Germany, the country's inward investment promotion agency, will be on hand to present the many advantages that Germany offers to investors in the bioplastics industry. The conference takes place on November 21-22, 2007.

Data indicate the strengths of Germany's bioplastics industry: a market volume of 5000 metric tons per year (t/yr) puts the German market for bioplastics in the development phase. This means that there is still great potential for investors, as proven by the industry's 30% growth in recent years.

German bioplastics are aided by the country's being the largest European market for plastic products. An average of 18.2 million tons of plastic are produced in Germany annually and, of those, 3.8 million are devoted to plastic packaging. Germany has also exempted bioplastic materials from its mandatory product recycling system for the next five years. This legal change will lead to a savings of 1,500 EUR/t over plastics derived from fossil fuels. There is therefore great potential for bioplastics to profit by replacing traditional plastics.

The government also offers funding for R&D projects. This initiative has been the catalyst in the formation of industry clusters, (e.g. Bio-Pro Baden-Wurttemberg GmbH, which includes 54 companies and 34 research institutes), encouraging cooperation between industry and research centers. 78% percent of German consumers are willing to pay higher prices in order to purchase organic food. This market creates a demand for environmentally friendly packaging, thus aiding the bioplastics industry.

In addition to having a booth on the conference floor, Invest in Germany, will organize a VIP Dinner for investors in the mainframe of the conference. "Germany is a prime location for bioplastics investments. It provides optimal governmental support, a world-class research landscape, and a domestic market that is keen to purchase environmentally friendly products, such as bioplastics," notes Raphael Winkler, Senior Manager for bioplastics at Invest in Germany. The conference takes place in the Newport Bay Club Convention Center just outside of Paris.
