About Cory I am starting this column for several reasons. First, I never know how to answer the question, "What do you do?" when lay people ask me about my research, hence the name of my column. I try to explain and see looks of confusion, boredom, and sheer terror begin to dawn on the face of the listener. The usual reaction is "Oh, that's nice," followed by running away, sometimes accompanied by an expression of pity that I could be boring enough to actually enjoy studying plant DNA. So I am hoping that by writing about my research, I can learn to explain this stuff a little better, and any of my family and friends who actually care can read this and get a better understanding of what, exactly, I do. Also, I think a career in science writing would be cool. I envision myself camped out at my computer, drinking coffee until 4 a.m. in my pajamas, and say YES!Tthat's the life for me! So I would like a little practice in bringing my probably unrealistic dreams to fruition. Finally, the kind of DNA change that I study is new, and nobody believes any of our data yet. So getting these ideas out into more mainstream arenas will hopefully help spread the word and make them more acceptable, and maybe increase our grant funding.
