About David I'm a retired theoretical and computational linguist (PhD, theoretical linguistics, U of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, 1974). From 1982-2007, I was a research scientist and sometimes manager at the IBM T J Watson Research Center, where I worked on many topics including natural language database query, machine-learning-based text analysis and text categorization. From 1987-89, I worked at IBM Japan's Tokyo research laboratory, where I participated in the development of a Japanese-English machine translation system. Over the years I have also taught at various universities including Yale, NYU and the University of Illinois.
