Josh Berson
About Josh I am a barefoot runner, committed vegan, and anthropologist of science. My work focuses on how we negotiate boundaries among self, other, and environment and how we construct the categories we use to make sense of the world: human vs. animal, living thing vs. machine. I also write about how science, especially the social sciences, enters into this work of boundary-building, and how anthropology and law influence each other. Right now my two big research interests are the future of human eating habits and how pervasively data-mediated environments are changing what it means to participate in sentient communities. I also have an ongoing interest in the phenomenology of noisiness. Since 2010 I have been a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, where I participate in a bunch of collaborative research projects: The Sciences of the Archive, Endangerment and Its Consequences, and Critical Neuroscience. I'm also affiliated with the Mind, Brain and Culture group at McGill. In previous lives I was a computer scientist and an interactive media designer (during the First Internet Bubble). I hold an AB in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard (1997), I spent 1998–9 as a postgraduate researcher at the Oxford Computing Lab, and in 2009 I received a PhD in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania.
