About Liz
My experience as a science educator is framed within the context of a scientist dedicated to relaying technical scientific concepts to the general public. In my 15 years in the science education community of San Diego County, I have been active as an informal science educator as well as developed programs and materials while working as a marine biologist at various organizations. My experience in the latter has led me to explore methods and activities by which students learn scientific concepts.
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science at the University of San Diego in 2001, and then developed a career in marine mammal bioacoustics before obtaining a Master's of Science degree in Biology at Point Loma Nazarene University in 2014. In 2011 I also obtained a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist certificate from Mesa College as I found it a prominent tool within the biological sciences. I currently serve as the Director of Education at a marine science research company called Bio-Waves, Inc. Scientifically, I am involved in analysis of marine mammal acoustic data, and assist with GIS needs and scientific reporting. As the Director of Education, I have developed programs such as a Passive Acoustic Technology training program for working professionals, organized marine mammal acoustic and GIS workshops for high school students, and developed an internship program at Bio-Waves. I also serve as the Executive Director for Expanding Your Horizons of San Diego, an organization that provides hands-on STEM learning opportunities and mentorship to middle and high school female students. I am looking forward to working with you all this semester!
