About Russ Russ Blake is a computer scientist with a long-term devotion to physics. Mr. Blake's interest in computers has always had a physicist's bent, his primary contribution being the Microsoft Windows Performance Monitor which is shipped on every version of Windows. He wrote a book on using that tool to detect bottlenecks in computer systems ("Optimizing Windows NT") which received numerous industry accolades. In addition his seminal paper on "Optimal control of thrashing" solved the thrashing problems that plagued early virtual memory systems by applying Dicrete Optimal Control that utilized his permformance monitoring facility to implement a simple state machine solution. He was manager of and responsible for Windows NT performance in its initial releases, which surprisingly for a new system beat all competition. He has four patents. Mr. Blake left Microsoft Research in the mid-nineties to pursue a career in sculpting. He has returned to computing and is currently a consultant in the fields of Data Mining and Business Intelligence. Mr. Blake holds a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin and a Bachelor's in Mathematics from Antioch College.
