About Tyson
My name is Tyson DeAngelis and I am 27 years old. I recently received my PhD in Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I have a B.S. in Biology with a marine science concentration, also from UAB, and a GED from Palm Beach County, FL (don't you wish your high school degree came with a cool abbreviated title).
Just to illustrate that prior to college I wasn't a total waste of space, I spent 4 summers at Duke University's TIP program studying forensics, robotics, chemistry, and astronomy. For those of you who don't know the TIP program its the creme de la creme of nerd camps.
As an undergraduate student I got to cut open the heads of huge red snapper (to remove otoliths), fish the private "research" reefs of the gulf coast's resident snapper expert, cruise the Mobile, AL delta studying SAV communities (while simultaneously trying to not get eaten by alligators), and hike along a 2 mile stretch of secluded beach studying deprecated nests of the diamondback terrapin.
My graduate studies took a turn toward the molecular. My lab's primary focus is epigenetics and nutrition as it applies to breast cancer. My dissertation research involved neoplastic transformation, proteomics, transcriptomics, and mehylomics. I was a fellow in the NIH funded Cancer Prevention and Control Training program at UAB.
I amn currently a research scientist at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, in the Genomic Services Lab run by Shawn Levy. We offer a full range of genomic platforms, including our most recent addition the HiSeq 2000.
