- Results Confirm Previously Demonstrated Survival Advantages of Tarceva in This Difficult-to-Treat Disease

- ABSTRACT No: 4507

Adding Avastin (bevacizumab) to a combination of Tarceva (erlotinib) and chemotherapy significantly improves the time patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer live without their disease getting worse ("progression free survival"). These data, presented for the first time today at the 44th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago, also showed a trend towards extending life expectancy.

MIT scientists say they have created a membrane, a mat of nanowires with the touch and feel of paper, that can absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil, and can be recycled many times for future use. The oil itself can also be recovered. Some 200,000 tons of oil have already been spilled at sea since the start of the decade.

In addition to its environmental applications, the nanowire paper could also impact filtering and the purification of water, said Jing Kong, an assistant professor of electrical engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and one of Stellacci's colleagues on the work.

She noted that it could also be inexpensive to produce because the nanowires of which it is composed can be fabricated in larger quantities than other nanomaterials.

Nautiloids are the sole surviving family of externally-shelled cephalopods that thrived in the tropical oceans 450–150 million years ago. However, in the intervening years their modern soft bodied relatives dumped the shell and developed complex central nervous systems; which makes Nautilus ideally suited to discover the ‘evolutionary pathways that led to the development of the complex coleoid [soft bodied cephalopod] brains’ say Robyn Crook and Jennifer Basil.

Knowing that the simple Nautilus brain lacks the structures required for memory in more sophisticated cephalopods, Crook and Basil decided to test the living fossil’s memory.

Merck & Co., Inc. said today that it is gratified that a Texas appeals court overturned the August 2005 verdict of a state court jury in Brazoria County and rendered a judgment in favor of Merck in the VIOXX product liability case Ernst v. Merck. It was the first VIOXX case to go to trial after the Company voluntarily removed the medicine from the market.

Merck also said today that a New Jersey appellate division has overturned the punitive damage and consumer fraud awards in the 2006 verdict in a two-plaintiff VIOXX trial involving Thomas Cona and John McDarby.

"We are gratified that the Texas appeals court correctly found that VIOXX did not cause Mr. Ernst's death and reversed the previous decision for the plaintiff in the first VIOXX case to go to trial. In addition, the New Jersey court correctly reversed the awards of punitive damage and consumer fraud. Today's decisions overturn almost US$40 million of damages and attorneys fees previously awarded to plaintiffs at trial," said Bruce Kuhlik, executive vice president and general counsel of Merck & Co., Inc. "We intend to seek further review of the portion of the award that remains standing after the New Jersey decision. We continue to believe Merck acted responsibly."

- Report Benchmarks the Current State of Lung Cancer Care Across Europe

The fragmented organization and management of lung cancer diagnosis and care in many European countries are exacerbating already poor survival rates amongst patients with the disease. That is the conclusion of a new report from a group of leading Swedish researchers published on http://www.comparatorreports.se (1).

There is a great need to improve outcomes for patients with lung cancer. It is the most lethal form of cancer in Europe and causes between 15-28 per cent of all cancer deaths. The burden lung cancer places on patients and their relatives is profound; it also places a significant economic burden on society.

It's no surprise that a woman in a bikini can increase a man's sexual appetite but research in the Journal of Consumer Research says that men who watched sexy videos or even handled lingerie had more appetite for everything - and it impacted their decisions about soda, candy and even money.

Authors Bram Van den Bergh, Siegfried DeWitte, and Luk Warlop (KULeuven, Belgium) found that the desire for immediate rewards increased in men who touched bras, looked at pictures of beautiful women, or watched video clips of young women in bikinis running through a park.

The authors believe the stimuli bring men's minds to the present as opposed to the future. "The study demonstrates that bikinis cause a shift in time preference: Men live in the here and now when they glance at pictures featuring women in lingerie. That is, men will choose the immediately available rewards and seek immediate gratification after sex cue exposure."
