With a new president in the White House bringing in a former Natural Resources Defense Lawyer and long-time anti-science progressive, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., there is new concern about erosion of American leadership in science and health.

If leadership is just spending money on things like theater in foreign countries or paying yourself $100,000 to rewrite data from government surveys on why some people don't trust vaccines, we are not losing much.(1)

Hopefully with Republicans agreeing about some of the more ridiculous positions of the left - seed oils and vaccines are bad - acceptance of science will blossom among the nearly 90% of career government employees in Washington, D.C. who are Democrats.(2)

It was only last decade that Democrats wanted to put warning labels on GMOs - they didn't seem to know that cows are genetically engineered, along with bananas, watermelon, and 2,000 other products, many of them deemed organic™. They wanted to put warning labels on "processed" food.(3)

There is No True Scotsman when it comes to food. You may think your weedkiller is "natural" because it has the brand name Dawn rather than chemicals, but it's still chemicals.

And all of your food is processed. We've been processing food for thousands of years and a 2018 study using an electron microscope at chars from the Shubayqa 1 site in Jordan pushed that back by about 4,000 more. That means humans were eating processed food 14,000 years ago. The study found remains that were definitely bread-like and the authors believe the grains were pre-agricultural forms of einkorn, millet, or rye.

That means humans had learned to enjoy processed food long before they had domesticated growing the grains to be make it.

Editors at The Guardian newspaper in England and Environmental Health Perspectives in the U.S. may be horrified to learn they were wrong in trusting Kennedy and other lawyers about science all along, but the evidence-based community knew it.

NOTES:

(1) Leadership also needs to mean more than turning on the exact same positions that the left prized only because they have been adopted by the right, like vaccine denial. It looks inauthentic and the public are right to be skeptical of journalists and academics who suddenly predict the republic will fall - but only because Republicans are doing what Democrats did for 25 years.

(2) America is already doing more than its part on emissions, our per capita is lower than 100 years ago, but if the left abandons its Boomer Environmentalism war on nuclear energy, we'll have clean, affordable energy in 15 years. If the next president instead goes back to the Clinton/Obama war on energy, we'll just spend $10 trillion on Chinese solar panels with kill switches and have rolling blackouts.

(3) Because the leadership was and is urban activists who know nothing about farming and food, they didn't realize all food is processed. Good luck walking into a field and munching on wheat. Then they had to pivot and manufactured "ultra-processed" food and that has convinced no one except the food nannies everyone ridicules anyway.
