While passively watching an episode of South Park,¹ my spidey sense tingled - something was amiss, and it wasn't the barely surviving buttons on Cartman's pants. I grabbed the remote from the huz and rewound to the spot that caught my eye² - a young kid, Token Black, is singing in front of an audience at the Miss Colorado pageant.

I had a "driveway" moment today listening to NPR - you know, where the story is really interesting and you've arrived at your destination but want to hear the end and folks walking by your car stare at you like you're about to pull off a drug deal?

Anyway, the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association announced the first new diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer's in about 25 years - the last diagnostic criteria were released in 1984.

Alex Antunes And Science 2.0's Project Calliope in Wired

Alex Antunes, space columnist and mastermind behind Project Calliope, got some love from Wired's online Gadget Lab.

It doesn’t always have to be a scientific experiment. Antunes’ project, called Project Calliope, will use magnetic, thermal and light sensors to detect information in the ionosphere and transmit the data back to earth in the form of sound. That sound is almost like space music, he says.

“Just like people have taken ambient sound and used it in music, artists can take this and create something out of it.” says Antunes.

Before I get into the 'bio' aspect of this article I want to put it in context by pointing to a means of ocean mixing that is not as well known as it deserves to be. And to put that, in turn, in context: a new report from NSIDC confirms that there is a lot of open water in the central pack near the North Pole. That open water was noted by one of my readers, Lord Soth in a comment.

Chaos is the disorder of a dynamical system but it is not completely unpredictable. Researchers are convinced that locating the origin of chaos and watching it develop might allow science to predict, and perhaps counteract, outcomes.

Like having a heart attack.

Writing in in the journal CHAOS, researchers say chaos models may someday help model cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal electrical rhythms of the heart) and help to understand the behavior of ventricular fibrillation, a severely abnormal heart rhythm that is often life-threatening, in order to mitigate it.
