If we can't get rid of CO2, the greenhouse gas that gets the most press, perhaps we can store it, say researchers.    Maybe even in rock form.     Carbon dioxide when mixed with water forms carbonic acid (also known as carbonated water or soda water), which can percolate through  rocks, dissolving some minerals and forming solid carbonates with them, thereby storing the carbon dioxide in rock form.

Sigurdur Gislason of the University of Iceland has been studying the possibility of sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in basalt and presented his findings today to several thousand geochemists from around the world at the Goldschmidt Conference hosted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

I have nothing against BP.  BP was our biggest advertiser last year.  I think BP is generally one oil company that generally cares about the future of energy and reasonable use of the planet's resources.

But it must be at the VP level and down that people have a clue.  Because at the top they are Klondike Kops.

BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg, not learning any lesson at all from Tony ("I want my life back") Hayward's many public relations misfires, decided to rescue his company's reputation by responding to a reporter about President Obama's comments that BP should "keep in mind those individuals, that they are desperate, may lose business that have been in their families for two or three generations" by saying ...

"We care about the small people."

People who have been around a long time know the somewhat convoluted history of Science 2.0 in general and Scientific Blogging in specific but the top question I get after people say, "Oh, you're that guy!" is "Why did you call it Scientific Blogging?"

Why not Science 2.0?   Well, there's a practical reason and a philosophical one.  The practical reason is that the way domain names work it isn't really possible.   In order to make Science2.0.com I would have to make Science2 a subdomain of 0.com and that has been in existence since 1985.   Yes, 1985, well before Tim Berners-Lee blessed us with an elegant way to make a World Wide Web.  VeriSign owns it and they are unlikely to give it to me.

My mother used to keep fasts on holy 11th day of the moon calender called Ekadashi.
We waited as c hildren that she will make her special meal for fasting day. It consisted of Kutu ka atta a sort of coarse grain with low calorific value. Besides this she will also use flour from Trapa bispinosa. A plant growing in ponds and its fruits had two spines which gave it the name of T. bispinosa.
Stragely enough on my recent visit to Germany a saw the flour of the Trapa bispinosa being sold for some euro ( in India would be some rupees) in nicely packed bottle in reform house or natural food house.
It was supposed to be helpful in controlling menstrual disorders in women.

No hindu house in a village will be without a plant of Tulsi Ocimum sanctum . Surprising other religious groups in India also had their sacred plants.
I had this plant in my house in the hedge and surprisingly I never had the swine flue or any flue for the last 20 years. What is the correlation. The plant has strong insect repellent . It is also known as protector against radiation damage.
Devotees in temples get some holy water which is stored in container made or copper. The container of the copper is said to have germicidal properties. Remember famous Bordeaux mixtrue which was developed in France for the control of powdery mildew in grape yards, basically contained a mixture of CuSO4 and lime. Does copper provide some antimicrobial activity.

South Korea Fails to Launch Space Rocket





The's second attempt to launch its first space rocket has failed.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Ahn Byung-man announced in a briefing on Thursday that the Naro space rocket was functioning normally until 137 seconds into flight, but the ground control center lost its communication link thereafter at an altitude of 70 kilometers.

He said the rocket is presumed to have exploded before the first stage booster was separated, citing a video footage from a camera installed on the second stage of the rocket.
