About Nicholas Nicholas is a PhD student in biochemistry and molecular biophysics at the California Institute of Technology. He holds a bachelor degree in chemical engineering from Michigan Technological University. Termites cannot digest wood without the help of microbes. Nicholas's dissertation work is helping solve the mystery of how these microbes convert wood so efficiently into termite energy. Nicholas focuses on two questions: How do microbes cooperate to achieve a goal? What implications do these interactions have for health and the environment?
