The SAE Foundation, part of SAE International, is holding two competitive events for 1,000 high school and college students from nine countries at Michigan International Speedway.

A high school competition for students to experience the engineering process by designing a model Formula One Car using 3D CAD software, manufacturing their model using CAM software and a CNC machine and racing their vehicles in 10 regional competitions across the country to qualify to race in the US National Championship, where the winner can compete in the F1 in Schools World Finals in the fall of 2012. These competitions involve not only the racing of the cars but also a verbal presentation, portfolio and pit display judging, and an engineering interview of the team.

The Formula SAE competition is organized around the concept that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. Over 118 student teams will design, build and test a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving.
