LONDON, October 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Commenting on the latest quarterly BP profits, with GBP6.4 billion returned, up 148% on the same quarter last year, Tony Woodley, joint general secretary of Unite, said: Struggling, worried families will have every right to feel angry that as the temperature plummets, BP's profits rocket. While the poor and vulnerable cannot make ends meet or heat their homes, the greedy oil companies are banking money faster than they can count it.

It is no longer acceptable for Government to stand on the sidelines while such astronomical windfall profits are raked in. It is time to put an end to this obscene profiteering. A windfall tax on the oil giants would help six million people heat their homes this winter - and would send the clear message that profiting from the bare bone basics of life is not just immoral but will not be tolerated by our Government.
