TOKYO, February 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoya Corporation today announced financial results for the third quarter ended December 31, 2009. Net sales were 106.8 billion yen for the quarter, a 5.2% decrease from 112.7 billion yen in the same period last year. Operating income was 18.9 billion yen, a 13.8% increase from 16.6 billion yen in the same period last year, mainly due to increase in orders and productivity. Compared to the second quarter ended September 30, 2009, sustained recovery in orders since April resulted in an increase of both net sales and operating income.
Net income for the third quarter was down 6.5% to 11.7 billion yen compared to the same period last year. Earnings per share for the quarter were 27.24 yen compared with 29.13 yen in the same period last year.
In this anemic economy, the good news is that there is an increase in orders and the demand for larger memory capacity in glass memory disk business, said Hiroshi Suzuki, chief executive officer of HOYA. The development of technology for 3D television also has a good impact on our LCD photo mask business.
For the first nine months ended December 31, 2009, net sales were 308.6 billion yen, down 16.9% compared to 371.2 billion yen in the same period previous year, operating income was 46.9 billion yen, down 20.6% compared to 59.1 billion yen in the same period previous year, and net income was 25.9 billion yen, down 50.9% compared to 52.9 billion yen in the same period previous year.
