LONDON, August 25, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Oserian Farm in Kenya - one of Interflora's Fairtrade suppliers - is based on the shores of Lake Naivasha and provides the company with some of the beautiful flowers you see on http://www.interflora.co.uk.

On 245 hectares of land, the farm produces around 400 million stems a year - mainly roses and carnations. There are around 6,000 workers employed at Oserian and the farm provides them with housing, healthcare and schools for their children.

Following a visit to the farm in 2009, Interflora has donated more than GBP2,000-worth of books, sports supplies and electrical equipment to the two farm schools - Oserian Hilltop Academy and Oserian High.

Flowers and other products with the Fairtrade mark mean the workers benefit from labour and environmental standards. They also benefit from an additional Fairtrade Premium, which goes to education, healthcare and the local community.

It allows communities like Oserian to choose where the money goes, meaning they get to use it in the areas where it is needed the most. Not only are the workers at Oserian able to live more comfortably, but the farm is also a huge conservation area. The Oserian Sanctuary covers 7,300 hectares, and many endangered species have successfully been reintroduced.

It is amazing to see how Oserian Farm has benefited from the sale of Fairtrade flowers. And Interflora is happy to have been able to use some of the profits from its Fairtrade range to give back to the workers and their families.
