PITTSBURGH, January 30 /PRNewswire/ --

Panopto, Inc. announced today the availability of CourseCast 1.5, the newest version of the lecture-capture technology developed and first implemented at Carnegie Mellon University. CourseCast 1.5 is available to qualified academic institutions free of charge through the Socrates Project.

CourseCast enables educators to capture, edit, index, archive and stream video and audio over the Internet. CourseCast gives students on-demand access to indexed lectures and course material, enabling them to experience or revisit entire lectures, or to focus on segments of their choice. CourseCast is easily deployed using standard PCs and peripherals, which substantially drives down the cost of lecture-capture deployment.

Enhanced features of CourseCast 1.5 include: -- Cross-platform viewer built using AJAX and Silverlight(TM) -- Automatic processing of recorded lectures directly to Web pages -- Edit recorded videos from any networked computer and view edits instantly -- Support for arbitrary collections of object material (any number of screen captures, high-definition chalkboard/whiteboard captures, or PowerPoint(R) slideshows) for any lecture -- Improved content creation workflow and management interfaces -- In-viewer note taking and searching of notes and PowerPoint(R) slide text -- Rapid deployment

Eric Burns, Panopto's Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder, said, "CourseCast Version 1.5 is a direct result of our collaboration with early Socrates Project members. Together we are accelerating the development of rich-content capture and knowledge management systems by incorporating lecture-capture best practices directly into the CourseCast product line."

Announced in December 2007, the Socrates Project makes CourseCast freely available to universities, colleges and K-12 schools. In exchange for free access to the CourseCast platform, Socrates Project members participate in beta programs aimed at continually enhancing the technology. More than 150 institutions, from state university systems to small private schools, have now initiated the enrollment process in the Socrates Project.
