Redknee (TSX: RKN; AIM: RKN), a leading provider of mission-critical software and solutions for communications service providers, congratulates the KAMA KAWAIDA alliance for being shortlisted for the Best Pan-African Initiative category at the AfricaCom Awards 2008. Based on Redknee's Roaming Recharge solution, KAMA KAWAIDA extends the concept of borderless roaming to allow subscribers to top-up their pre-paid accounts wherever they are within the roaming alliance, based on local currency and using local vouchers on their handset to top up. The Award winners will be announced on 18 November at AfricaCom in Cape Town.
KAMA KAWAIDA is a service provided by six networks over five countries including Safaricom Kenya, Uganda Telecom, Vodacom Tanzania, U-COM, MTN Uganda and MTN Rwanda, that allows travelling pre-paid subscribers to pay their familiar home network tariff to make calls whenever they are roaming on these partner networks, avoiding costly roaming charges. This also saves money for the Operators because they are no longer required to produce, distribute, track and sell top-up vouchers among the partnering networks. Together the operators now enable their traveling pre-paid subscribers the freedom to cross borders, currencies and networks with little forethought or planning required.
The launch of KAMA KAWAIDA is a fantastic achievement, given the geographies covered by the alliance, the level of partnership and collaboration required and the technical capability to make it happen, says Redknee CEO Lucas Skoczkowski. With more subscribers roaming across the African continent, this alliance meets a genuine need for cost-effective and straightforward roaming between countries.
