- MAAWG General Meeting: Leading German Telecom Service Provider O2 Protects its Customers' E-mail Accounts With eXpurgate From Eleven

O2 is using eXpurgate, the unique spam filter and email categorisation service from Berlin-based security specialist eleven, to protect its customers' inboxes comprehensively against spam and phishing mails, eleven has announced on the occasion of the 13th General Meeting of the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) in Heidelberg, Germany. O2 had been on the lookout for a new solution to arm them against ever-increasing volumes of spam, now and in the future. The decision in favour of eXpurgate was clinched by its exceptionally high spam recognition rate, the elimination - due to the way the system operates - of false positives (emails that are mistakenly categorised as spam) for business-related emails, and the low levels of administration and hardware required.

"With the vast number of emails that find their way through our server every week, and the ever-increasing volumes of spam flying around, we need an anti-spam solution that ensures a negligible amount of spam gets into our customers' inboxes whilst simultaneously avoiding wrongly rejecting important emails as spam. eXpurgate is the perfect solution for this," says Dr. Klaus Schäfer, head of mobile portals at Telefónica O2 Germany. He summarises eXpurgate's strengths thus: "The extent of spam levels affecting our customers was significantly reduced, and without the occurrence of false positives. Another plus is that since installation, which only took a few hours, maintenance work has remained at an absolute minimum."

But there was another important factor in the choice of a new anti-spam solution: the need to protect against future spam developments. "We've been looking for a solution that can not only deal with further growth in spam levels but will also identify new types of spam quickly and unfailingly. eXpurgate accomplishes both of these things very effectively," says Dr. Klaus Schäfer.

The eXpurgate anti-spam solution not only searches email content, it also checks them for the one criterion common to all spam mails - the fact that they are mass mailings. eXpurgate reduces every email to a code, made up of just a few bytes (a kind of digital "fingerprint"), that is then compared with the codes of other emails. The greater the frequency with which the same or similar email is sent out within a short timeframe, the greater the possibility that it will be spam. Reducing emails to a tiny code conserves IT resources and ensures that even large volumes of spam can be dealt with effectively. What's more, the mass mail criterion allows the spam recognition rate to remain unaffected by any new tricks and techniques developed by spammers.
