LA SORBONNE, France, September 11 /PRNewswire/ -- On the occasion of the one-day conference organised by Medical Enterprises (Les Entreprises du Médicament) and IMS-Health, on the Challenges facing Health Europe, Ms Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Health and Mr. Christian Lajoux, Chairman of Medecine Enterprises (Entreprises du Médicament) gave an introduction to the Conference.

The Commissioner gave a summary of some of the main areas for which she is responsible:

Defining Directives on care without frontiers, helping Member States to deal with the risks of pandemics, educating young people on their own health risks (alcohol, drugs, obesity...)

The Chairman of Entreprises du Médicament pointed out and recalled the clear principles on which health policies should be based: "Fairness, Solidarity, Safety and Innovation."

Christian Lajoux reminded the Conference of, "The need for States to encourage innovation and progress in therapeutics, the need for Europe to strengthen its attraction in a world-wide market place experiencing rapid change. Health must remain a motor for growth at a time when the European pharmaceutical industry risks stalling."
