About Jesus A. Romo Doctoral Candidate in the Cell and Molecular Biology program at the University of Texas at San Antonio under the microbiology and immunology track. Jesus obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2010 in biology. He then went on to the Master’s of Science in Biology program at UTSA where he worked under the guidance of Dr. Janakiram Seshu in his molecular microbiology/bacterial pathogenesis laboratory and taught the microbiology laboratory for two years. Jesus' thesis involved the characterization of the polyamine transport system and the function of polyamines in Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, along with the gene regulation used by this organism to adapt to the different environments it encounters. Jesus received his Masters of Science in Biology in 2012. Throughout his degree and still today, he worked with the CEIG/STEM outreach program from UTSA to establish microbiology laboratories in high schools as the main instructor leading the program. He trained the high school teachers and, along with the program manager and the teachers, developed the curriculum for the two institutions CEIG chose to work with. Jesus was also in charge of developing working experiments that were also safe for a high school, helping with their high school science fair projects, and teaching the laboratory once a week for the students. Jesus then moved on to a faculty position in medical microbiology at Galen College of nursing for two years where he taught the medical microbiology lectures and laboratories as well as anatomy and physiology. Jesus joined the UTSA PhD program in 2014 under the guidance of Dr. Jose Lopez-Ribot. The lab specializes in drug discovery and development, fungal biology of the opportunistic pathogen Candida albicans, and biofilms. Jesus' research interests are Fungal Biofilms, Drug Resistance, Drug Discovery, Drug Repurposing, Microbial Pathogenesis, Molecular Microbiology, and Host-Pathogen interactions. His career objective is to become an expert in the field of microbiology while also developing new and innovative ways to enhance science education in the classroom. Jesus is also interested in teaching at a higher education institution where new skills can be added to his repertoire while at the same being able to enhance the science curricula. He would also like to develop the STEM programs at the institution while also helping mentor minorities in the sciences. Jesus has been involved in the advancement of STEM programs and outreach programs his entire career and he would like to continue that as well.
