I was invited to give a talk and participate in a round table, at a conference on Physics communication in Frascati, a small town near Rome where the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics has its headquarters. The conference also has a poster session, so I produced a simple poster to advertise this site.

Here is the poster (in italian -sorry). The full-sized version is 10 Mbytes so I will avoid posting it here.

Below is a quick-and-dirty translation of what I write in a few of the frames:

Basic research must not continue ignoring the need to take part in scientific outreach. There exists a giant information gap between articles on professional scientific magazines, which are the main result of the research studies, and what is reported by wide-diffusion press, or even worse by other media.

Such a gap is the result of several factors, and it is seriously nocuous to scientific progress since it produces untrust and misunderstanding in common sense with respect to the need and importance of pure research.

Who does research can and should spend part of his or her time in bringing door to door the enthusiasm for science, and the certainty in its fundamental importance for the progress of society, in a sort of laic evangelization. Internet offers us a possibility to do that. This blog represent the personal contribution of the author for an awareness of the public to research in fundamental physics.

Contrarily to what many still think, it is not impossible to explain concepts of significant depth to readers who lack the necessary background. What is difficult is to make this offer palatable, and communicate with a language that may reach the maximum number of listeners.

For that reason this blog was born and has continued to be in English. English is not only the language of science, but also the language spoken the most by internet users.

The blog receives over a thousand visits per day, and collected since 2005 a total of almost two million hits.
