What? Another boring chess game?

Buzz off, this is my blog, and if I feel like posting a chess game, that's what is going to happen. But if you like the game, stay here - this is a nice game.

Again played after hiours today, and again on a 5' online blitz server (chess.com). What amazes me is that these days I seem to have a sort of touch for nice attacks and brilliant combinations. Let me show you why I am saying this.

The starting position arose after the following opening sequence:

tommasodorigo - UTOPII841, chess.com April 16 2025

1.e4 c5 2.c3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.cxd4 d6 5.Nc3 Nf6 6.Bd3 Nc6 7. Nf3 Bd7 8.0-0 Be7 9.a3 0-0 10.h3 a6 11.Be3 b5 12.b4 h6 13.Qd2 Rc8 14.Rfd1 Re8 15.e5! dxe5 16.dxe5 Nd5 17.Nxd5! exd5.

Now fireworks start. Can you guess the easy beginning move of the combination by means of which white wins?

18.Bxh6!!

Yes, not hard to find, but you need to calculate it to see that it is actually winning. Black took back and so did I:

18....gxh6 19.Qxh6 f5

The last move was more or less forced for black, but now the second part of the combination unfolds:
20.exf6ep Bxf6. What would you play next?

21.Bh7+ Kf7

Patzer sees a check, gives a check. Easy, but we have a rook hanging on a1, what are we going to do about it?

22.Rxd5!!

Nothing! This is the strongest move and the quickest way to the win! Black in desperation took the bait, but the position is anyway hopeless:

22....Bxa1 23.Ng5+

And this move wins. If now black plays the only alternative (and relatively best) 23....Qxg5, white will reply with 24.Rxd7+! Re7 25.Rxe7! and black cannot recapture with the queen because of 25....Qxe7? 26.Qg6+ Kf8 27.Qg8 mate!, so they have to reply 25....Nxe7 26.Qxg5, with a completely winning position for white.

In the game my opponent instead played 23....Ke7?, allowing 24.Qd6 mate.

Ah, the warm feeling of discovering truth in chess...
