An Experiment In The Causes Of Warfare

The President of Europe has not been elected; he was appointed in a secret meeting of the heads of government of the 27 EU member states. They chose one of their own. Herman Van Rompuy was the Prime Minister of Belgium.

Many a nation has had a civil war in order to remove an unelected leader - most usually a king.
King Charles I of England comes readily to mind.

Many nations have gone to war with another nation rather than be ruled and taxed from afar by an unelected leader - most usually a king.  I cannot recall an example at present.  Perhaps one of my American readers can think of one.

On Friday, 20th Nov 2009 Europe woke up to find itself governed by one Herman somebody or other.  Europe collectively yawned, turned over and went back to sleep.  It was news to me.  I like to think that I keep up with the news, especially about elections.  There were no elections.

Herman who? I asked myself, and then searched the web for information.  It seems others are asking the same question.  Herman who?

I, personally, do not recognise an unelected nobody as president of the asylum, formerly the Roman Empire, now the European Union of Bureaucrats and Subsidised Entrepreneurs.  But that is by-the-by.

Those who would rule by fait accompli, coup d'etat, force, trick or stealth should read their history books.

There was once a European country where an unknown 2nd lieutenant got together with some cronies in 1799 and installed himself as First Consul.  Not too long afterwards he became dictator.  He much preferred to be called Emperor. He lasted until 1815, when, after many battles fought by men of many nations he was finally persuaded to stop trying to boss every European about.  I quite forget his name.

There was once a European country where an unknown corporal got together with some cronies in 1933 and installed himself as Chancellor.  Not too long afterwards he became dictator.  He much preferred to be called Fuhrer. He lasted until 1945, when, after many battles fought by men of many nations he was finally persuaded to stop trying to boss every European about.  I quite forget his name.

There was once a European country where an unknown politician got together with some cronies in 2009 and ...

Herman whatshisname was voted president of Europe, population roughly 500 million, by 27 cronies.

Way to go, Europe!  Way to go Gordon Brown, Prime Minister of what used to be a democracy.

What a wonderful experiment in social psychology!  Install a leader that the people didn't ask for and didn't vote for and see if anyone notices.  If the people take exception be ready with the seismometers - there's going to be the biggest marching of feet in human history.

Let's all sit back and see if 500,000,000 people are content to be governed by an unelected leader, or if they will rise as one and correct the situation.  The no elections experiment failed in 1939-1945 but what the heck - if at first you don't succeed just keep on trying!
