Raw milk advocates claim that unpasteurized milk cures or prevents disease, but no scientific evidence supports this notion. Testing raw milk, which has been suggested as an alternative to pasteurization, cannot ensure a product that is 100 percent safe and free of pathogens. Pasteurization remains the best way to reduce the unavoidable risk of contamination, according to the authors of a review published in the January 1, 2009 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases which examines the dangers of drinking raw milk.

I just saw on Discover.com a blog post that almost made me wish I was teaching Chemistry again.....almost.

An editor at Nature discusses the internet and the ethics of science communication (PDF). The paper doesn't turn out to be much of a discussion of science communication on the web - the piece ends up being more of a dig at open-access publishing advocates. On top of that, the discussion of science on the internet is rather banal, making a few fairly obvious points without offering any new solutions.

A little of this and a little of that today...

I had just clicked "save" to publish my blog and the internet closed without warning, so this is an abbreviated version of my abbreviated blog. Two stories caught my eye on the train ride in to work - the Washington Post's compacted commuter daily, the Express, featured one bona fide science story and one story that mentioned the word science, so I'll include both.

As a former dog owner and dog lover, I was not really surprised by last week's report that dogs have been found to "sense inequity", a.k.a. be jealous of the dog that's being treated better than they are.

Scientists did a very simple experiment- they asked two side-by-side dogs to perform a trick, then only rewarded one of the dogs with a treat.  Who wouldn't be jealous of that?  Eventually the non-rewarded dogs stopped doing the trick (smart dogs!).

Chemistry is wonderful. Chemistry now has to play more than ever an interdisciplinary role for new visions. Here are two wonderful studies that I caught singing to me in 2008. Both contain elegant science that promises sheer greatness. Each rocks in a different manner by means of chemistry.



The first one is in polymer chemistry, a dear interest of mine, for molecules that can rotate and slide. The second, an Inventors Hall of Fame winner, solves living-cell networks to cure the sick.

Dinosound revival is no kidding to me. I was at the foothills of tall snow-capped mountains by the sea when this happened. A very loud sound filled the meadows and startled my senses like a dinosaur call! Well, it happened again, the next day about the same time, just before the sunset and for several minutes. I had to inquire swiftly for a local answer.







Come on, did you just accept that we know the sounds of an animal that lived long before even a woman was on the world scene? I mean, did the dinosaurs bark or tweet, scream, hiss, roar, coo, neigh or sing?
