Homage To Letter-Writing Earns Grawemeyer Music Prize

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, December 1 /PRNewswire/ --

The Lost Art of Letter Writing, a four-movement concerto for violin and orchestra by Australian composer Brett Dean, has earned the 2009 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.

The work, commissioned by the Cologne Philharmonie and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra for violinist Frank Peter Zimmerman, was chosen for the prize from among 145 entries worldwide. Dean conducted and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam accompanied when the piece premiered in 2007 in Cologne.

It's a wonderful solo vehicle that also contains terrific writing for orchestra, said Marc Satterwhite, a UofL music professor who directs the award.

Hormone therapy could accentuate certain pre-existing heart disease risk factors and a heart health evaluation should become the norm when considering estrogen replacement, new research suggests. 

The research also showed that in women without existing atherosclerosis, hormone therapy use included some positive effects on lipids but also some negative effects related to heart health, said MaryFran Sowers, lead researcher and professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Ok, so Canada elected a conservative government again, meaning that the Conservative Party of Canada
(a merger of the former right-centre Progressive Conservative Party and far-right Canadian Alliance) won more seats than the other parties. However, they did not win more than all other parties combined, which means that they have a minority government. In such a parliamentary system, the Prime  Minister is the leader of the party who won the most seats, although his party may still be a minority in parliament.
