It doesn’t take a research study to tell us that the typical American diet is crap. We eat foods full of saturated fats, which are difficult to break down, and way too much of most foods.   Over 25% of the American population is estimated to be obese, according to the Center for Disease Control(CDC).   Obesity can lead to severe health problems including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

But somehow our diet stays the same. However, changing our eating habits to resemble a more Mediterranean Diet can help prevent some of these health problems, according to a wave of studies over the last year.

LONDON, February 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Unite, the UK's largest union, has expressed astonishment at today's (Thursday, 19th) announcement by HP that it proposes to cut the pay of its entire global workforce by up to 5%, with more for senior executives.

The announcement was made as part of the HP reporting of its first quarter results for 2009, with revenue growth of 1% compared to last year to GBP20bn, with profits of GBP1.3bn.

A new hypothesis, published in today's Nature, suggests that Alzheimer's may be caused by a normal prenatal developmental process gone awry in the adult brain.

Before you cast aside years of beta-amyloid research or proclaim a cure is imminent, relax - the results are only from lab and mouse studies. The research indicates that beta-amyloid precursor protein "and DR6 are components of a neuronal self-destruction pathway, and suggests that an extracellular fragment of APP, acting via DR6 and caspase 6, contributes to Alzheimer's disease."
