Pt Jawaharlal Nehru wrote famous book Discovery of India. It depicted unity in diversity. Now if you apply the same to the world of plants and call it discovery of biodiversity , the unity in diversity is more than evident. The global earth is the only place for mankind to live. Drinking water is limited and so is the earth’s area of arable land, river systems, hills roads, railway lines, pastures, and industrial production , mineral resources and all things that are present on the earth are limited. Population growth is unlimited. Imbalance in population growth in different parts of the world is alarming as earth can not support unlimited number of people , cattle and rodents and pests. Nature strikes a perfect balance in having predators which take care of each other. However once the predators are gone the imbalance shall set in. Snakes were there to eat the rodents ,red ants were there to eat white ants, and even some pathogenic fungi killed insects. Plants have strange system of associations. Plants of one family or one genus could grow well in one surrounding but some unrelated plants are able to grow as if they have some bonding with other plants. Like composite family or sunflower family has the largest distribution in the world and once it enters an ecosystem it can wipe out all other plants and establish itself in large numbers. It spends minimum efforts in making flowers i.e. its single flower of sunflower consists of thousands of florets which put a ray florets on the borders of an inflorescence and large number of disc florets make flowers Each disc floret produces a seed. No other plant family has this method of reproduction. It soon outnumbers all other plants and establishes itself in that place in large numbers. Solanaceae is another family which is the family with lots of secondary metabolites and is able to defend itself . Water Hyacinth or terror of Bengal once introduced in that region wiped out almost all the lotus from ponds by its excessive reproduction. It was also a major cause of drying of several fresh water ponds. If the ecological balance is disturbed for a water body sooner or later it will dry up. Like the reed swamp stage of Ghana bird century or Kevladeo bird sanctuary of Bharatpur. Once the plant diversity was disturbed by introducing excessive grazing, and introducing Prosopis juliflora in the area the water ponds started drying up. Plants have to live in harmony and in a perfect balance and once this balance is disturbed the biodiversity is gone. Preserve the balance and preserve the biodiversity of plants for our own survival.
