Medical insurance as a means of financing healthcare services is a relatively novel concept in most sub-Saharan African countries. However, increasing awareness of the benefits of insurance, driven largely by the introduction of national insurance, has led to a significant expansion of coverage.

The medical insurance industries in African countries is currently in the introductory to medium growth stage, notes Frost Sullivan Research Analyst Tiwonge Mkandawire. There is, however, an increasing level of awareness of the benefits of medical insurance cover among members of the general public. This is further supported by government efforts to expand coverage of national health insurance schemes such as the National Health Insurance Scheme and NHIF in Ghana and Tanzania respectively.

This briefing will provide an overview of the medial insurance industries in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Tenzania and Zambia. It will benefit healthcare providers, insurance companies as well as pharmaceutical and medical device suppliers with products that require reimbursement in these markets.
