GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, May 12 /PRNewswire/ --

- Re-using the existing device-network infrastructure, the Model 2172R transparently extends Ethernet up to 3,000 feet (900 meters) or more in industrial-automation environments

Patton -- the leader in business and carrier-class network access, connectivity and VoIP equipment -- is now taking orders for the Model 2172R 50-Mbps Ruggedized Ethernet Extender for industrial Ethernet applications.

By exploiting previously-installed twisted-pair infrastructure for long-reach Ethernet connections, Patton's 2172R eliminates the expense and disruption of installing fiber or CAT5e cable when linking Ethernet-based PLCs and other shop-floor equipment to the office LAN.

Achieving a maximum full-duplex line rate of 50 Mbps, 2172R extends the reach of Ethernet segments up to 3,000 feet or more over existing TTL, RS-232 or RS-422/485 serial circuits.

"Ethernet has taken over," said Johnnie Grant, Product Manager. Today's shop-floor equipment is all Ethernet. Yet re-cabling is often the show stopper for the factory-automation, sometimes costing more than the communications equipment. Patton technology preserves capital investment by extending the useful life of existing circuits. Our solution lets you keep using what you already have."

Designed for industrial-automation and device-networking environments, the 2172R is enclosed in a ruggedized metal case that is wall and DIN-rail mountable. The extender features extended operating temperatures ranging from -10 to +70 degrees Celsius. For high-humidity installations, an optional conformal coating offers additional protection from condensation.

Six user-selectable symmetrical and asymmetrical line rates allow each connection to be tuned for optimum reach, rate, and noise resistance. For high-bandwidth applications, the 50 Mbps symmetrical rate extends Ethernet connection up to 800 feet (245 meters)*. For noisy environments, the 10 Mbps symmetrical rate extends Ethernet connection up to 4,000 feet (1,200 meters).

"Breaking boundaries is our legacy," Mr. Grant continued. "Since we created the Ethernet Extender market in the 1990's Patton innovation has been driving Ethernet reach and rate ever farther and faster. Today, with our industrial Ethernet solutions, we continue pushing Ethernet technology into an ever-expanding range of applications."

Launched during Patton's 25th year of operation, and building on the proven reliability of Patton's CopperLink(TM) network extension technology, the 2172R complements Patton's industrial-networking solutions, including EtherBITS(TM) device servers and EnviroNET(TM) hardened networking products.
