BRACKNELL, England, February 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Monday's BBC Panorama programme highlighted the environmental cost of drinking bottled water and interviewed environment minister Phil Woolas who urged UK consumers and businesses to rethink their choices. The programme also featured a meeting at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) where tap water was served in a jug.

The BBC website attracted comments from consumers who applauded the call for reduction in the use of plastic bottles. However, they also highlighted the fact that in some areas of the UK, while perfectly safe to drink, the tap water is cloudy; affected by limescale; or heavily chlorinated. One respondent claimed that his sensitivity to chlorine prevents him from drinking his local tap water.

Nick Heane, Managing Director of Tana Water UK, comments: "Forcing staff to drink tap water, when it may be unpalatable to some, will only cause resentment. Employers can overcome this issue by using mains-fed machines which filter out chlorine, lead, rust, sand and limescale at the point of use, enabling staff and visitors to drink tap water that tastes as good as the bottled variety, without the environmental impact".
