Worries about Carbon Monoxide have become increasingly prevalent as a result of several major incidents, especially the tragedy in Corfu that claimed the lives of two children. Recent announcements by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have urged councils and landlords across the UK to have gas appliances regularly checked in rental properties, as it is thought that thousands may not have a CO alarm fitted.

According to industry sources, between April 2007 and March 2008 there were 63 reported incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning, caused by faulty gas appliances within the UK. These leaks resulted in 21 deaths and a further 125 serious injuries, which are believed to represent a small proportion of actual incidents. What many do not realise is that according to research over 2 million gas appliances in homes, rental properties and businesses around the UK could be faulty.

Many people now want to know what we can do to protect ourselves from this hidden danger that has no taste, colour or odour.

NAPIT are once again working with CO-Awareness, a registered charity, to raise awareness of this silent and difficult to detect killer.

November will see CO-Awareness week return for a third year with campaigners fighting for justice on behalf of people poisoned by exposure to the products of combustion. The President and founder of the organisation, Lynn Griffiths, whose whole family has suffered as a result of carbon monoxide exposure, is due to launch CO-Awareness Week on Monday 17th November 2008 at the House of Lords.

NAPIT Chief Executive John Andrews says, Once again CO-Awareness week is upon us and whilst over the past year there has been a lot of talk, but once again very little concrete action.

We urgently need the legislators to make it a statutory requirement to have CO Alarm fitted.

This winter will see a significant number of deaths and appalling injuries, all if not most of which could be prevented if the talking stopped and real action started.

The week-long event will be held in the following areas across the country: London - Monday 17th November - House of Lords (Invitation Only) Belfast - Tuesday 18th November - Northern Ireland Assembly (Invitation Only) Cardiff - Wednesday 19th November - Welsh Assembly Edinburgh - Thurs 20th November - Scottish Assembly Liverpool - Friday 21st November - Liverpool Town Hall

If you, your family, or friends have been affected by Carbon Monoxide you are welcome to attend. People who have suffered the affects from Carbon Monoxide along with councillors, industry experts and medical professionals will all be present to discuss their concerns and issues on the lethal gas.
