The Large Hadron Collider is increasing gradually the number of proton bunches that circulate in the machine. Yesterday's fill saw 104 colliding proton bunches,  producing the record instantaneous luminosity of 3.5 x 10^31 collisions per square centimeter per second. This is no surprise, of course: luminosity is essentially the product of the number of particles crossing each other per second divided by the cross section of the beams, so if you increase the particles and manage to keep the beam transverse size constant, luminosity must go up.

This whole week there are write-ups all over the internet about something called dry water. Ben CarterWell, originally the idea was patented in 1968, so its not out of the blue.

But there is a new use to it. Tiny water droplets are coated with water repelling silica (abundant in beach sand) to make it dry.

That way each drop is distinct particle and can not recombine with other droplets to form liquid. It is more than 90% water yet in the form of dry powder!

Hitler gets a bad rap universally for his genocide but a startling subset of progressives in America view Joseph Stalin favorably despite his killing more people.  Time magazine put Stalin on its cover 11 times.  Then Rwanda, Cambodia and Darfur were essentially ignored while Bosnia was labeled genocide and became a war crime issue despite only a few thousand actual deaths known.

Family Fabaceae dominates the plant world and consists of a large number of plants which are having Ayurvedic medicinal importance. This family Fabaceae consists of 600 genera with 12000 species and are arranged in three well defined sub families and they are Papilionaceae, Caesalpiniaceae and Mimosaceae. You didn't know this, but Science 2.0 as originally planned was going to be three people and almost was - a programmer, a graphics person and then a business guy.     But it didn't work out that way, for reasons that may seem obvious;  namely that 90% of people claim they would have joined Google for free when it had no revenue and 30 venture capitalists told them search engines were a dead area.    Yet 98% of those people wouldn't - they think they want to work in 'start ups' but they think that means making more than they make now and having no boss.   I live in an Intel town and the list of people I have met who claim they want to work at a company or start one is long.  They're mostly lying to themselves.

I am something of a historical repository for my family.   So I have some cool stuff from way back, like a photograph of my great-great-great grandfather, and then also more recent items, like one of my mother's 'ration' books (coupons still attached!) from World War 2 and a wax record my grandfather made for her at a USO(1) before he left to occupy Japan at the war's conclusion.

Why people go to listen to one leader in huge numbers and dont go to listen to him after some years or go more in numbers

Since the man came to present form the countries originated around the globe and within a span of 50 years the number of member of United Nations has increased in several dozens in a span of 40 years only. Boundaries of societies have become boundaries of nations but nations have almost dissolved their boundaries to progress faster and made unions while some nations are fighting for boundary dispuptes as some are trying all means to grab whatever they can. Human being are suffering in some regions because of political conflicts though they have nothing to fight at individual level but their nations do , Nature has environments and not boundaries. Cosmology has been crossing my transom.  I've been getting press releases from the new online Journal of Cosmology.  Below is a sample.  They have a respectible team and, frankly, a kick-ass background image for their website (shown below).

And, they have a novel economic model-- a $35 submission fees, plus a $150 fee if published.  Given most academic journals are free to submit but have fees upwards of $1000 to publish, it could be seen as a breakthrough in open journals.  However, much as any writing gig that charges a submission fee, I am worried they are more focused on the cash than the science.

There can be no ideal person but there can be ideal ideas. Only one thing that a writer needs is ideas. They may or may not be ideal.

Ideas get a Nobel Prize if written in the proper manner. 

Ideals can be persons , nations, situations, affairs, or situations but they keep on changing with time zones, places, persons and time of the judgment.   Some ideals are now no more ideal. 

Philosophies change. The more successful writers challenge the ideas and become ideal for that time period but if the system gets changed they may face trouble. People worship people but suddenly if the situation changes the ideals also change.

Scientists know that time passes faster at higher elevations.  It's a curious aspect of Einstein's theories of relativity that previously had to be measured by comparing clocks on the Earth's surface and rockets.

But NIST physicists have made it a lot more personal - a scale of about 1 foot - and showed that you even age faster if you are taller than your relative.   The good news is you won't be able to see the difference, that one foot difference in height adds about 90 billionths of a second over a 79-year lifetime.

The NIST researchers also observed another aspect of relativity, that time passes more slowly when you move faster, at speeds comparable to a car traveling about 20 miles per hour.

A new study says reorganization of the brain's cortical network in young men with significant experience playing video games gives them an advantage not only in those games but also with other tasks requiring visuomotor skills.

Water-gel-based solar devices, what researchers liken to "artificial leaves", can act like solar cells to produce electricity, bringing technology a bit closer to solar cells that more closely mimic the efficiency of nature and farther from the disaster of today that advocates want mandated and subsidized for questionable benefit.

If it pans out, they will be less expensive and more environmentally friendly than silicon-based solar cells.

The bendable artificial leaves are composed of water-based gel infused with light-sensitive molecules – the researchers even used plant chlorophyll in one of the experiments – coupled with electrodes coated by carbon materials, like carbon nanotubes or graphite.
