On the other hand, they are well known to trick one’s mind into taking the metaphor too literally, thereby creating problems that are not actually reflective of the reality of the natural world, but are only perverse constructs of our own warped understanding of it.

Thanks to NASA and the LCROSS satellite, I may soon know where the best place is to build my Moon Base. A new analysis of the data from the Lunar Prospector, launched in 1998, shows large concentrations of hydrogen around the lunar poles. If that hydrogen is in water form, then astronauts could potentially use it on a permanent outpost.

Certain lunar craters are permanently shadowed, never reaching temperatures above -170 C. Many of these areas also contain significant amounts of hydrogen. If that hydrogen is attached to oxygen in water ice form, it should be stable for millions of years. Astronauts deployed to a base near one of these sites could use this water since hauling it from Earth would be prohibitive.

Larry Summers says that R&D spending should not be part of an economic stimulus package, contrary to what many scientists were probably hoping for.

Summers actually has a good point. The rationale for current ideas about a fiscal stimulus package is that government deficit spending is helpful during times when monetary policy isn't getting traction, but such spending has to be followed by a commitment to deficit reduction during better times. So now we spend like it's 1943, but when things pick up we need to cut back.

You can't make this stuff up. Or maybe you can, but still, I think it's mind-boggling.

A doctor in Colorado found a surprise when removing what he thought was a benign growth from a newborn's brain. Instead of a microscopic tumor, out popped a tiny foot, partially formed hand, a thigh and another partially formed foot.  

The doc said "he could not tell whether the miniature limbs were from a benign stem cell tumor called a teratoma or the remnants of an identical twin that did not split off and survive, a condition called fetus in fetu."

I didn't know that Christmas was associated with hangovers, but apparently in Britain it is. Whatever gets you through family time, I guess. Anyway, the venerable BMJ dedicated some quality space to debunking holiday myths, according to this BBC article.

1. The only cure for a hangover is time. Or more alcohol.
2. Eating late does not equal gaining more weight. Eating lots of bad food does.
3. Sugar does not cause hyperactive behavior. I beg to differ.

The British Medical Journal has been busy overturning medical myths, according to BBC News.  
"Both physicians and non-physicians sometimes believe things about our bodies that just are not true,"
wrote Dr Rachel Vreeman and Dr Aaron Carroll in this august publication.  But the BBC continues:
We've all been told to put a hat on in winter because most heat is lost through the head.

The researchers even found that the US Army Field manual for survival recommends covering your head in cold weather because around 40-45% of body heat is lost through the head.
