The disastrous magnitude 7.0 earthquake that triggered destruction and mounting death tolls in Haiti this week occurred in a highly complex tangle of tectonic faults near the intersection of the Caribbean and North American crustal plates, according to a geologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

Jian Lin, a WHOI senior scientist in geology and geophysics, said that there were three factors that made the quake particularly devastating: First, it was centered just 10 miles southwest of the capital city, Port au Prince; second, the quake was shallow—only about 10-15 kilometers below the land's surface; third, and more importantly, many homes and buildings in the economically poor country were not built to withstand such a force and collapsed or crumbled.

The quake struck on a 50-60-km stretch of the more than 500-km-long Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault, which runs generally east-west through Haiti, to the Dominican Republic to the east and Jamaica to the west. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies tt is a "strike-slip" fault, meaning the plates on either side of the fault line were sliding in opposite directions. In this case, the Caribbean Plate south of the fault line was sliding east and the smaller Gonvave Platelet north of the fault was sliding west.

Most of the time, the earth's plates do not slide smoothly past one another; they stick in one spot for perhaps years or hundreds of years, until enough pressure builds along the fault and the landmasses suddenly jerk forward to relieve the pressure, releasing massive amounts of energy throughout the surrounding area. The same conditions exists along California's San Andreas Fault.

Compounding the problem, Lin says, is that in addition to the Caribbean and North American plates, , a wide zone between the two plates is made up of a patchwork of smaller "block" plates, or "platelets"—such as the Gonvave Platelet—that make it difficult to assess the forces in the region and how they interact with one another. "If you live in adjacent areas, such as the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Puerto Rico, you are surrounded by faults."

Residents of such areas, Lin says, should focus on ways to save their lives and the lives of their families in the event of an earthquake.  "The answer lies in basic earthquake education," he says.

Those who can afford it should strengthen the construction and stability of their houses and buildings, he says. But in a place like Haiti, where even the Presidential Palace suffered severe damage, there may be more realistic solutions.

Some residents of earthquake zones know that after the quake's faster, but smaller, primary, or "p" wave hits, there is usually a few-second-to-one-minute wait until a larger, more powerful surface, or "s" wave strikes, Lin says. P waves come first but have smaller amplitudes and are less destructive; S waves, though slower, are larger in amplitude and, hence, more destructive.

"At least make sure you build a strong table somewhere in your house and school," said Lin. When a quake comes, "duck quickly under that table."

Lin said the Haiti quake did not trigger an extreme ocean wave such as a tsunami, partly because it was large but not huge and was centered under land rather than the sea.

The geologist says that aftershocks, some of them significant, can be expected in the coming days, weeks, months, years, "even tens of years." But now that the stress has been relieved along that 50-60-km portion of the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault, Lin says this particular fault patch should not experience another quake of equal or greater magnitude for perhaps 100 years.

However, the other nine-tenths of that fault and the myriad networks of faults throughout the Caribbean are, definitely, "active."

"A lot of people," Lin says, "forget [earthquakes] quickly and do not take the words of geologists seriously. But if your house is close to an active fault, it is best that you do not forget where you live."

the tectonic plates being at crumble caused such a disaster.
one should never forget the place they are living under, more important is the Disaster Management Education which should be imparted.
The people in Haiti as well as the rest of the world is under great shock!! And quick actions are taken.

God Bless the Effected.

These natural disasters are like unleashing hell on Earth. For some it is a reality and a reminder for rest of us.

Yes, it's a reminder that we need to give aid to countries that are not as well off as our own. We live in the Western world and it seems that the worst we get is a recession, whilst others are living through massive large scale disasters like the tsunami and this earth quake in Haiti. It was mentioned the other day on another site that the aid that is being sent is less that 0.01% or something tiny like that compared to the amount that is being pumped in to keep out boys in Iraq.

As more than 30 aftershocks continued to shake the devastated capital Port-au-Prince, residents tried to rescue people trapped under rubble, clawing at chunks of concrete with bare hands. It seems the Caribbean is at war with itself – another earthquake took place, this time in the Cayman Islands.  The Cayman Islands earthquake was quite milder, as it registered than less than a 6.0 on the Richter scale, occurring 30 miles away from the Caymans, along the Oriente Fracture Zone, which is on the Cayman Trough, a trench in the Caribbean.

"Lin says this particular fault patch should not experience another quake of equal or greater magnitude for perhaps 100 years."

I guess not since they just experienced a 2nd rather huge earth quake that brought the numbers needing medical help from 300,000 to 600,000.. Haitians did sell themselves to the devil to get the french people out of their land. Its a fact. If this is because of what they did or if its just nature and selling your soul does nothing, that can be debated. But it is a fact they sold themselves to get french people out. Research your history.

Based on my limited geology experience, the aftershocks should spread around the main shock. To me Haiti situation looks like another HAARP intiative - 200,000 blacks gone. You geologists are really strange - those people working in HAARP will be laughing their butt off. You always have plate tectonics for every disaster where people die in mass...

Go to youtube and search for Jesse Venturas video on HAARP. You can also get videos on HAARP relation to Haiti. By the way if u dont know Jesse Ventura is the only independent elected by americans - not the bull shit democrats and republicans (both sides of the same coin).

The geologist who wrote thisarticle - i think u are a nerd, like many scientisits. Your simple explanation appeals for people with some scientific knowledge. But do u realize that there are earthquakes that occur without any "nature" intervention.

Did u ever heard that about a year ago, a new oil field was discovered in Haiti !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From January 2-13, Florida experienced a cold snap with several consecutive days of freezes from January 10-12. Crop damage ensued and sink holes opened up in some places as reported by a tampa newspaper. Any possible relation of the prolonged cold spell with the quake?

Earthquake in Haiti brings a lot of problems for citizens and guests of the country. This is a great misfortune for all of us. The country suffered enormous losses and now the economy will be restored very long. Many governvents borrowed money them and we all hope that the economy will recover as soon as possible. I think that they need financial help and we  are ready to advice them in all of question in this sphere.

This was the case of extreme destruction. I remember each & every track of it. Many people lost their lives, many lost every thing including their houses. The scene which I saw on TV made a great impact on me. I felt so bad but ould not do anything. May God bless their souls. exam results
