Transfusion-Free Medicine For Jehovah's Witnesses And The Transfusion-Wary

Patricia Ford, MD, a hematologist/oncologist and Medical Director of the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital, is one of the pioneers of bloodless surgery and has been teaching its technique to doctors around the world.

One technique a bloodless surgery can employ is called “cell salvage” in which blood lost during surgery is siphoned from the body, passed through a filter for cleaning and returned to the body. It can also be used by the physician during surgery to limit blood loss and to avoid the need for transfusion of blood from sources other than the patient.

Using this technique, “Jehovah’s Witness patients no longer have to die for want of blood,” says Ford.

Jehovah’s Witness patients believe that accepting blood from a source other then themselves defies the scriptural teachings of their religion. Originally developed to meet the needs of the Jehovah’s Witness community, bloodless surgery is transfusion-free and is acceptable to Jehovah Witness followers because they are being re-infused with their own blood. Bloodless surgery and medicine is a viable and life-saving option for these patients and those wary of the safety of the blood supply, and it is safe for a growing number of surgical and medical conditions, except for acute leukemia and traumatic injury.

“Bloodless procedures have proven to be safer than blood transfusion because they help eliminate complications resulting from transfusions such as immunosuppression, infection, diseases from emerging pathogens for which our blood supply is not yet tested,” said Dr. Ford. “The hospital stay is also shorter for our bloodless patients, a cost savings for the patient and the institution,” she continues. Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia is one of the pioneering centers for bloodless medicine and surgery.

Dr. Ford likens the weeks-old blood often used for transfusions to “water from a dirty fish tank.” Depleted of most of its oxygen-carrying capacity, the stored blood is not maximally beneficial to any patient.

Prior to surgery, Dr. Ford prepares patients carefully - using medicines to build red blood cells, and managing their hemoglobin count. A higher hemoglobin level lowers the risk of transfusion.

Dr. Ford has performed the largest number of successful stem cell transplants without blood transfusion of anyone in the world. Among the procedures for which Dr. Ford has prepared patients for bloodless medicine and surgery are cardiothoracic surgery; radical hysterectomies, prostatectomies, cystectomies, and repair of aneurysms, chemotherapy management, and total hip and knee surgery.

The bloodless team at Pennsylvania Hospital has saved the lives of many Jehovah’s Witness patients who otherwise would not have received care. “We see patients from all over the country who come to us for our expertise in bloodless medicine. The needs of the Jehovah’s Witness community have helped us develop practices that can not only save their lives, but can also benefit the entire patient community,” explained Dr. Ford.

Jehovah's Witnesses elders will investigate and disfellowship any Jehovah Witness who takes a blood transfusion,to say the issue is a 'personal conscience matter' is subterfuge to keep the Watchtower out of lawsuits. Many Jehovah's Witnesses men, women and children die every year worldwide due to blood transfusion ban.Rank & file Jehovah's Witness are indoctrinated to be scared to death of blood. FYI 1) JW's DO USE many parts aka 'fractions' aka components of blood,so if it's 'sacred' to God why the hypocritical contradiction flip-flop? 2) They USE blood collections that are donated by Red cross and others but don't donate back, more hypocrisy. 3) The Watchtower promotes and praises bloodless elective surgeries, this is a great advancement indeed.BUT it's no good to me if I am bleeding to death from a car crash and lose half my blood volume and need EMERGENCY blood transfusion. Know this, the reason that JW refuse blood is because of their spin on the 3000 year old Biblical old testament, modern medicine will eventually make blood donations and transfusions a thing of the past. When this technology happens it won't vindicate the Jehovah's Witnesses and all the deaths that have occured so far. The Watchtower's rules against blood transfusions will eventually be abolished (very gradually to reduce wrongful death lawsuit liability) even now most of the blood 'components' are allowed. In 20 years there will be artificial blood and the Red Cross will go on with other noble deeds. None of these changes will absolve the Watchtower leaders or vindicate their twisted doctrines --- Danny Haszard born 1957 3rd generation Jehovah's Witness http://www.dannyhaszard.com Tell the truth don't be afraid

    TRANSFUSION CONFUSION

At this point there are NO safe blood 'alternatives' this is Watchtower propaganda that any exist.

Artificial blood raised death risks by 30 percent and almost tripled the odds of heart attacks in 16 clinical trials analyzed by researchers, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. Lead study author Charles Natanson said he feels the products should be tried only on patients sure to die.
"There have been no meaningful beneficial effects reported in any trial" of these products, said Natanson, who is a National Institutes of Health researcher. "The only population where a justification could be made is that with an expectation of 100 percent mortality."
Charles Natanson said he feels the products should be tried only on patients sure to die.

Bleeding to death is a whole lot more dangerous than taking a blood transfusion.

I spoke to a paramedic about this one time, and to him it wasn't an issue. In the situation mentioned above by Danny Hazardous, what a person needs immediantly is a volume expander. Ambulances do not even carry blood and have no way to determine a blood type. Here is an excellent link on the subject:

In 1964 my Father, who was not one of Jehovah's Witnesses was in an accident between a pick up and a train. He was thrown about twenty feet and broke open his skull. He was rushed to a hospital and my Mother, is was one of Jehovah's Witnesses, was called. She could not give consent to this procedure even though the Doctors said without a doubt that he would die. He was left alone in the hallway, and the nurses were not even allowed to change out his bandages. Other Jehovah's Witnesses found a Doctor in Houston who who help in Houston. He left his own practice and flew immediantly to Amarillo at his own expence to work pro bono. He burst into the scene and did not even pause before odering the nurses with detailed instructions. The other Doctors said that he would die, and then they say he would never wake up from his coma, and when he did they siad he would never walk again. He did walk, and lived another 38 years.

I have seen quadruple bypass heart surgery without blood transfusion, the patient not only did very well, but the doctor said that he recovered faster. INcidently he was not a witness.
Another patient received a double mastectomy without blood, and she did very well indeed. She was not a witness either.

Yet another patient was Bleeding very badly. The Lab technician came into her room and told her that she was going to bleed to death unless she had a blood transfusion. She refused. She was rushed to a hospital in Houston where doctors operated on her to stop the bleeding. Two weeks later she came to me and said "let's go see the lab technician."
She walked in and said, "you remember when you said I HAD to have a blood transfusion and if I refused I would die?" Well I am here to tell you that I am very much alive and doing just fine. Thanks for your "help" during my crisis.

Another patient had a virus infection which had caused her blood count to go below 10. I don't know the medical term for it, but she was so weak that she could not even move a muscle. The doctors gave her erythropoiten and gave her body time to build up some strength. They did the operation, and she did very well.

Another case was a patient who had a burst apendix. The doctors said that it was gangrenous. They gave him a catscan and said that they needed to rush him into surgery right away. He refused blood transfusions. After the operation, he did very well and recovered very fast. He had no complications with the procedure.
About a year later, this patient had a swollen prostrate. He had surgery. He began to bleed profusely after the operation. He bled for 5 days straight. The doctor decided to go in and take a look. Before the operation the patient was asked if he would accept a blood transfusion. He refused. The operation went well and the patient fully recovered so fast that the doctor was amazed. The patient had gone from holding 2400 cc's of urine, to a whopping 240 cc's. The doctor called in two other doctors to introduce this patient to them. He said that he had never see a patient recover so well.

There have been many other patients that I have seen personally who have not received blood transfusions and they have done extremely well. In fact, what the folks who are against Jehovah's Witnesses won't tell you is that there are some 80,000 doctors worldwide who do totally bloodless surgery now. Go to www.bloodless.org to see for yourself.

One thing when it comes to comments about how JW's "die" from refusing blood, is that they don't tell you how many die from accepting blood products. My son died from one, so I know that blood can kill people, first hand.
As for those who would have people take blood transfusions and the complications which may result, Jehovah God told us to abstain from blood, and it is in your own bible. Whether you choose to follow God's word on the matter or not is your choice. But I have seen the consequences of disregarding it in the case of my son.
I fell for the advice of people like Mr. Hazzard above and it cost my son's life. Since then I have found that transfusions of saline solution and other alternatives are far safer. They don't have to "match" the saline to the person's blood type. They don't have to warn the patient that the blood could give them diseases which could kill them. They don't have to tell the person, "I am sorry but even though we tested this blood thoroughly, we failed to detect the AIDS virus in it. We were sold tainted blood. So use blood at your own risk. Oh and by the way did I mention that people who have received several blood transfusions in the past can get something which kills them because they have received several transfusions of blood in the past? Check out citomegalovirus? I may have misspelled it.
Also too, they don't tell you that there are such things as Hepatitus A,C, B, D, G, etc. in the blood. You won't find any of that in salt water, which is saline solution.
Another fact? Blood does nothing more for the human body than saline solution does for the first 24 to 48 hours after it is administered. IN addition, blood is a tissue, thus it can cause your already weak body to have to use what energy it has in trying to recuperate to fight off the blood tissue in your body, because it is a foreign substance. They don't tell you that either. You won't have that problem with saline.
And one more thing these guys are great at telling you to take blood, but then how many transfusions have they had? How many transfusions would they gladly give their kids? When the shoe is on the other foot, they may not be so eager to do so, especially when their kid could come down with aids from a blood transfusion.
As far as I am concerned, I will not take a blood transfusion, make mine saline please. After all what do they automatically start on you when you enter the hospital? Saline transfusions, or saline drips.......Hmmm, why don't they automatically give you blood instead, since after all according to the critics, it isn't dangerous at all!

The accusations of these people here known as EX jw,are simply not true. Im a doctor and if any one want real info on bloodless therapy, just ask me. Jehovahs Witnesses are indeed life savers with the motivation and inspiration to help us Doctors do our jobs better with Natural Alternatives to blood that peopl dont want you to know about.
