ASHBURN, Virginia, May 23 /PRNewswire/ --

Brainware, Inc., the leading provider of intelligent data capture and enterprise search solutions, today announced that Her Majesty's Prison Service (HMPS) in Newport, U.K. has landed a prestigious award from the International Quality & Productivity Center (IQPC). HMPS was recognized as the winner of the Shared Service Excellence Award in the category of Best New Shared Service Center during the annual awards ceremony in Barcelona, Spain.

Last year, HMPS adopted IDC-distiller(TM), Brainware's flagship intelligent data capture product, to automate invoice processing operations at its new shared service center. In doing so, HMPS has successfully reduced the costs of its accounts payable function and transformed it from a cost center to a business-value generator. The agency has saved taxpayer funding to be reallocated to further its mission: securely containing and promoting the rehabilitation of the prison population.

"We have been focused on process improvement and automation in order to deliver a high performing shared service," said Steve Hodgson, Head of Shared Services for HMPS. "An example of this is an improvement of the Purchase-to-Pay process -- we have recently adopted Brainware as our paper invoice processing automation solution. The early results have been good and are improving all the time. We expect to be able to achieve world class levels of performance within a few months of implementation."

HMPS, part of the larger Home Office, is the British executive agency tasked with managing the majority of prisons in England and Wales. The HMPS Shared Service Centre in Newport, U.K. was created in 2005 to bring together and simplify business processes in the areas of finance, HR, and procurement.

"We're delighted for the success of our colleagues at HMPS," says Carl Mergele, Brainware's CEO. "It's clear that intelligent data capture and extraction is accelerating the pace at which shared service centers can deliver a significant return on investment. By automating an otherwise manual process, these organizations are achieving best in class performance faster and more efficiently than ever before."

The Shared Service Excellence Award is a part of a global IQPC initiative dedicated to acknowledging the achievement of excellence in the Shared Service arena. The Shared Services Excellence Awards have been established to honor, recognize and promote Shared Services Organizations (SSOs) that demonstrate true best practices. To identify and assess these leading organizations, the Shared Services Outsourcing Network has assembled an accomplished panel of Shared Services experts and leaders to accurately and objectively evaluate the true effectiveness of top SSOs.
