The Humanity + @ Caltech conference kicked off this morning in Pasadena with a dynamic group of speakers, discussing how humanity is being defined by technology, media, and by us, the active participants. People were inquiring about Twitter handles and web addresses, so I thought I would compile a list, and add to it as I find them.

In light of today's *way* over-hyped reporting of "new alien life" discovered by NASA-funded research (GFAJ-1, the arsenic microbe), I thought this song would be appropriate.

A few weeks ago, The Science Cheerleaders grabbed headlines with their appearance at the USA Science and Engineering Festival, where they cheered for citizen science and science literacy, as well as served to provide a new kind of role model for young girls, showing them they can be both cheerleaders AND scientists.

Following this public appearance, were two very strong reactions. One was overwhelmingly positive. The other was overwhelmingly negative and critical—and a lot of it came from scientists and science bloggers. 

I'm going to be honest here. I have a bone to pick with science.

Based on some of the responses I got, I decided to probe a little further. I wanted to see if I was in the minority in my opinion, or if others felt the same way. Apparently, I'm not alone.
It's that time of year again... for Donors Choose!

What is Donor's Choose? DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that allows needy classrooms from all over the country hook up with potential donors via the web. Teachers post their wish lists, with photos and descriptions of what they need, and you get to donate to specific projects, so you see exactly where your contribution is going.
