CHICAGO, February 11 /PRNewswire/ -- New Northern Trust facilities in Bangalore, India, the Chicago area and Fort Myers, Florida, each have been awarded the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification, recognizing the use of designs and materials that minimize environmental impacts.

We are proud to have received LEED Gold status on three vital facilities that will help us continue to deliver high-quality service to our clients worldwide, said Connie Lindsey, head of Northern Trust Corporate Social Responsibility. As part of Northern Trust's commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, we strive to ensure that our global operations and buildings are built in accordance with environmentally sustainable processes.

The Chicago-area data center received an additional Innovation in Design credit for restoring 87 percent of its site area with native planting and grasses that will flourish naturally without the need for an irrigation system. For employees concerned about their own carbon footprint, six parking spaces have been reserved for fuel efficient and car pooling vehicles along with bicycle racks and shower facilities. The data center also used 100 percent of low/no-volatile organic carpet systems, adhesives, sealants, paints, and coatings in the interior of the building.

The Bangalore, India office was the first commercial interior build out to receive LEED Certification in that city. The office was built with regional and renewable materials such as granite, recycled vegetable waste and bamboo. The office is also equipped with daylight sensors to maximize the use of natural light.

The Fort Myers office was built of 25 percent recycled material. Thirty-two percent of the building's materials were harvested or manufactured within 500 miles of the construction site.

LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
