Fertilizers producing wastelands in semi arid and arid regions. Some months ago I attended a conference in Germany where excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers was a cause of concern for the European Nations. Back home there is report that excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers ( Ideal broad generalization is N:P:K: 4:2:1) has resulted in ration of N:P:K 15:9:1. Excessive use of nitrogen and phosphorus in state of Rajasthan. Agriculture department as per recent report (Rajasthan Patrika. 28/04/2012) has accepted that this is causing danger of wasteland development and reduced yield of crops. The use of fertilizers which was 2.4 million tones in 2010-2011 has increased to 2.7 million tones in 2011-2012. Unbalanced use of fertilizers is reducing the soil fertility and damaging physical conditions of the soil. In my opinion this is resulting because the cow dung which was used for making FYM is increasing used for making cow dung cakes used for cooking purposes and this causes break in carbon cycle. The husk of Mustard which was earlier recycled to soil is now used in furnaces of of brick kilns. Excessive use of deep well ground water which is mainly saline or nearly saline is also causing destruction of upper crust of soil. The higher rate of evapo-transpiration (1500 mm per annum) as compared to precipitation (400 mm per annum ) leads to deposition of salts even with moderately saline irrigation water. There is urgent need to regulate soil structure by proper management and education to the farmers before irreversible damage is done. It is advised to use bioremediation practices for restoration of soil fertility.
