- Football Legend Launches E.ON National FA Cup Schools Day

Alan Shearer went back to school today to launch the annual E.ON National FA Cup Schools Day. The initiative, set up by FA Cup Sponsor E.ON, one of the UK's largest energy companies, aims to encourage 500,000 school children to participate this year.

Former Newcastle United and England striker Shearer made a guest appearance today at St John's Church of England School in London to take part in FA Cup lessons and a training session with the school football team. Shearer's visit helped to demonstrate some of the fun activities children around the country will take part in on E.ON National FA Cup Schools Day on Thursday 24th April 2008.

Building on the huge success of last year, where 300,000 school children took part, E.ON aim to make the event a regular fixture in the academic calendar. This year children across the UK will be treated to a series of fun classroom based activities. Core national curriculum subjects such as history, maths and English will be geared around the excitement, history and tradition of The FA Cup. In addition, lessons will include information on how kids can help the environment with handy hints and tips from E.ON's carbonfootyprint.com campaign aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of The FA Cup.

As well as the classroom based activity, FA Charter Standard schools will participate in special county football festivals. Managed by qualified FA coaches, the festivals will give children expert football tuition and coaching in the afternoon.

Parents, teachers and children who would like to find out more about how they can take part in E.ON National FA Cup Schools Day can log on to http://www.eon-uk.com/nationalfacupschoolsday for further information.

Speaking at the launch Alan Shearer said,

"It's great to see E.ON National FA Cup Schools Day return for a second year. Last year's event was a lot of fun with children all over the country taking part and learning about the history and heritage of this very special competition. Now is the time to sign up for this year's event, so we're calling on parents and teachers to register their schools and get involved."

E.ON's Head of Sponsorship & Events, Mike Thompson said,

"Last year's E.ON National FA Cup Schools Day was a huge success with 300,000 school children taking part. Our aim is to grow that to 500,000 this year. Our schools development programme is an important part of our overall sponsorship of The FA Cup and demonstrates our commitment to the communities in which we operate."

E.ON National FA Cup Schools Day forms part of E.ON's role as The FA Schools Partner. E.ON is also Sponsor of The FA Women's Cup and The FA Youth Cup.
